Coop still on track for success

19.02.2020, Coop generated sales of CHF 30.7 billion in 2019. EBIT increased by CHF 10 million to CHF 782 million and profit amounted to CHF 531 million. Retail advanced by 1.4% to CHF 18.0 billion, while wholesale/production achieved sales of CHF 14.1 billion, corresponding to growth in local currencies of 2.5%. Sales in online retail rose by 16.3%. Sales of organic products went up by 8.4% to CHF 1.8 billion. With sales of sustainable products of CHF 4.7 billion, Coop remains the undisputed market leader.


Coop generated total sales of CHF 30.7 billion. EBIT increased by CHF 10 million to CHF 782 million. Profit amounted to CHF 531 million and, before taxes, is roughly in line with the previous year’s level.

Equity amounted to 50.2% of total assets. Operating cash flow amounted to CHF 1.9 billion, corresponding to growth of 10.3%. The Coop Group thus continues to enjoy a very solid financial foundation and is well positioned for the future.

At the end of 2019, Coop employed 90 307 people (+728), of whom 56 582 (+373) in Switzerland.

Sales of organic products continued to develop very well and grew by CHF 139 million (+ 8.4%) to CHF 1.8 billion. Coop thus remains the undisputed organic leader in Switzerland. Sustainability sales amounted to CHF 4.7 billion.

The online business is also growing fast. Net sales amounted to CHF 2.6 billion, which is CHF 276 million more than in the previous year. Net sales in retail rose by 16.3%. Home electronics made a substantial contribution to this, with growth of 17.5% to CHF 602 million. Coop@home recorded growth of 5.4%, capturing further market shares. In the wholesale/production business area, net sales rose by 9.6%.

Retail
In retail, net sales grew by CHF 243 million to CHF 18.0 billion, corresponding to a rise of 1.4%.

Last year too, significantly more customers chose Coop as their shopping channel. Customer footfall at Coop supermarkets rose by 2.5%. At CHF 10.5 billion, net sales were 0.4% higher than the previous year.

The specialist formats lifted net sales by 2.7% to CHF 7.5 billion. Consumer electronics lifted sales by CHF 54 million and reached CHF 2.1 billion. Coop’s leading position was consolidated with this growth. Net sales at Livique/Lumimart developped well with growth of 2.0% to over CHF 200 million. Update Fitness performed particularly well with growth of 21.8%. With 48 studios, the company is now one of the leading fitness providers in Switzerland.

Wholesale/production
In wholesale/production, Coop achieved net sales of CHF 14.1 billion, an increase of 2.5% in local currencies.

Net sales of the manufacturing companies grew by 0.5% in local currencies, totalling CHF 4.8 billion.

The Transgourmet Group generated net sales of CHF 9.7 billion. Transgourmet thus grew by 3.7% in local currencies and further consolidated its position as Europe's second-largest wholesale supplies and cash & carry company.
